This recipe provides visuals and simple written directions for students with special needs to follow during a cooking lesson. We love using recipes like this in my classroom to develop language and increase independence in a way that feels meaningful and fun.
In class, we always make a grocery list first and go to the grocery store together to purchase the items in our recipe.
Once we have our ingredients, here's how our lesson goes:
1) Orally review ingredients in class using this recipe and the physical ingredients. Students practice responding to questions like, "what foods do we need for this recipe?"
2) Orally review our prep work. Ask students questions like, "What should we do first?" "What should we do next?" Students can refer to written directions or use picture clues to help.
3) Students complete prep work together (ex: cutting apples, cutting lemons)
