This is a fun way to work on place value with your students and work on concepts of one more than, ten more than, one hundred more than, one less than, ten less than and one hundred less than.
Directions for use: Laminate all pieces. Cut apples out and cut slits along dotted lines to slide the number strips into. Be sure to cut the number strips out intact as strips and do not separate the numbers into boxes. Be sure to leave the boxes marked “tab” on the strips so you have something to grasp as you are feeding the strip through. You can also make an extra tab on the top by adding a doubled piece of tape to the end to pull on. You will need the long strip to feed through the slits in the apples. Feed the number strip through going from the back of the apple into the front and then back out to the back. Your numbers will then show in the window box on the front of the apple. You can show the children how to move the number in the ones box for the number to go up one. You can show them how to move the number in the tens box for the number to go up ten. You can show them how to move the number in the hundreds box for the number to go up a hundred. You can also move the numbers down to show one less, ten less, one hundred less. You can choose not to use all of the strips if you are not working with tens or hundreds place yet.
