PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The common core standards ask students to be able to solve and explain multi-step problems. Many times, students struggle to be able to make the connections and follow the reasoning.

This is a scaffolded task that asks students to apply the Pythagorean Theorem and use distance = rate x time to determine the winner of a race. I have used this task with my lower level students with great success and then followed it with a more open-ended but similar assignment. Alternately, you can ask students to design their own race, determining distances and rates, and calculating the winner.
