Try this self-checking activity for practicing solving systems of equations word problems and applying the solution to another problem. This activity is similar to task cards, but with an answer bank. Cards are printed double sided with questions on one side and answers on the other.
Students start with all the answer choices showing and then flip over the "Start" card, which leads them to their first problem. They read the word problem and set up a system of equations. They solve for the specified variable, use their solution to answer a question, and then find their solution in the answer bank. When they flip over the card with their answer, they find their next word problem. They complete this for all five word problems.
This activity allows students to self-correct errors or small misconceptions as they practice. They also know when to seek additional assistance when their answer does not match any of the choices.
I also have a version where students solve systems word problems available here
