This is a fun way to see if your students can apply their knowledge of text structures and text features into their own creative writing pieces.
Children are "hired" by a magazine to write a fictional piece based on one of five given Story Starters. They must write the piece to fit one of the following text structures: cause & effect, problem & solution, sequence of events, descriptive, or compare & contrast. They must also incorporate at least 3 types of text features.
Teacher and student sample included.
My students had a great time working on this activity. It gave them some creative freedom and allowed me to see if they were able to apply text structures and text features to their own writing. They had fun creating the layout of their magazine article and were very proud to see other students and teachers stopping in the hall to read their magazine stories.
