When teaching the 5 Themes of Geography, part of the fun is the application of the 5 Themes. This movie/film guide gives students an opportunity to locate the 5 Themes while actively watching a movie/film of your choice. This activity could last 20 minutes to 50 minutes, depending on the number of examples that you want students to locate. In addition to the chart provided for students to list their examples of the 5 Themes, I have also included a description of each of the 5 Themes as a quick reference to be copied on the back. If you would prefer students to use your "in class" definitions, simply omit the second page when making copies.
I have used this activity with documentaries, popular movies and as a homework assignment on a program of the student's choice. When I have had students complete this as a homework assignment, I have provided time for them to share their findings in small groups (cooperative learning), allowing yet another layer of review.
Again, this activity provides an opportunity for students to apply knowledge of the 5 Themes, once you have provided instruction.
