April Packet - 5th Grade
**Get ready for the test**
Close reading comprehension questions modeled after the Common Core standards!
All of the following excerpts, charts, passages and diagrams are associated with either a variety of multiple choice reading comprehension questions, open-response questions, student inquiry, both short and long answer questions or a combination of strategies.
Students will get acquainted with taking complex-question assessments. Use for; weekly assessments, pre-assessment, post-assessment, progress monitoring, and whatever else you have in mind!
Questions involve; close reading, using context clues, inference, poetry elements, plot, characterization, analytical reading, comprehension, reading for meaning, vocabulary and so much more!

6. Poem – The Arrow and the Song
-Key Elements: Poetic elements, close read, synonyms, deciphering meaning, point of view, symbols, understanding illustrations
7. Fiction – An excerpt from The Ugly Duckling
-Key Elements: Close read, descriptions, character traits, context clues, setting, the behavior of bullying, understanding illustrations
8. Nonfiction – Bunny Craft
-Key Elements: Identifyign purpose, inference following directions, understanding steps and procedures
9. Fiction – An excerpt from Rose
-Key Elements: Close read, deciphering meaning, synonyms, moral character, personality
10. Nonfiction – Totally Awesome Recycled Products
-Key Elements: Close read, inference, compare/contrast
11. Nonfiction - The Titanic
-Key Elements: Close read, deciphering meaning, understanding nonfiction, understanding illustrations, structure, main idea
