This is one of my favorite things we do all year! It's a great activity for around April Fool's Day, but it's also a perfect mini lesson for the beginning of the school year or as you're preparing your students for end-of-year testing! Teach students to follow directions in a very fun and interactive way!
On April Fool’s Day (or close to it) I give my students this “quiz” to remind them how important it is to read carefully and follow directions. The quiz consists of 19 tasks—some a little outrageous and silly—but the catch is that the instructions at the top of the quiz tell students to read through the entire page before they begin. The final task on the page instructs students to not complete any of the tasks, but to just silently turn their paper over and read a book at their desk. I usually have one or two students who complete the “quiz” correctly. The rest of the class gets a good laugh—and learn an important lesson—when they realize that they didn’t have to do any of the tasks they just completed.
This would also be a great activity as you’re preparing for testing—we all know how important following directions is then!
