Fun way to practice listening for initial sounds in words for phonological awareness skills. This is a CCSS Reading Foundation skill.
There are enough different rainy day umbrellas for 6 players.
Laminate and cut out the word cards. The teacher/therapist shuffles the cards, and calls out one at a time.
When a student hears a word that begins with a letter on his/her umbrella (s)he gets a raindrop to put into the umbrella.
You can play until the first player to have a “full” (all letters covered with raindrops) umbrella wins, or until everyone has a full umbrella.
There are then 2 pages of beginning sound raindrops. Students can complete these beginning sound pages.
There are 18 beginning sound cards students can use to play a Memory-type game. Words with the same beginning sound are a match. You can also make these into a file folder matching activity if you wish.
There are 3 more pages of initial sounds matching.
