To learn about political, economic, and social challenges facing the Arab world today.
1-2 class periods
The lesson begins by reading with the class a few introductory paragraphs on how most Arab countries continue to struggle with difficult problems, but also play a significant role in world affairs.
Students are then divided into two teams that compete in a fun class game. It begins with class members reading a section entitled “Search for Unity." Some words, names, and terms are missing within the reading. But Team members will notice that the answer in space 1 begins with the letter “u” and ends with the letter “y.” If someone on Team 1 thinks they know the answer, they raise their hand and. if called on and correct, Team 1 scores 10 points. If incorrect, a player from Team 2 can raise their hand and try to give the right answer and score 10 points. If necessary, teams will alternate answering until the correct word, name, or term is identified.
Team 1 always goes first on the odd-numbered spaces, and Team 2 first on the even-numbered spaces. Correct answers are worth 10 points each. The same person cannot answer twice in a row for their team.
