Product Description

Worksheets to help make students more accountable for their Close Reader stories! Aligned with HRW Collections, this task asks my students to think more deeply about what they are reading-- especially when it comes to drawing conclusions and thinking about how ideas work together.

Skills with Arachne include comprehension, plot development, characterization, theme development, vocabulary, and inferencing. I have included a template and model for how to complete a theme development essay. Along the side I use abbreviations to help my students map out their essays.

My students would complete pages one and two independently after a whole class reading. We would complete pages three and four in class with activities and collaborative learning. Page 5 helps set them up for a quality literary analysis. Perfect for struggling writers, for first time lit analysis assignments, or for a model.

In the intro, HBBC stands for Hook, Bridge, Background, and Claim. (My students know that Claim and Thesis sentence are synonym terms.)

R stands for Restate + reason. E stands for Explain a plot point and Evidence to prove. A stands for Analyze how the evidence proves the evidence and reason.

My seventh grade students use the Close Reader annotations while we are reading, but I ask them to go back through and re-read to compose answers to several questions in a formal style. This serves as quality independent work, paired work, or classwork as a whole group.

I've graded these for completion and effort and I've graded these for ability to correctly integrate and expand on evidence in short answers. This is how I frequently keep students practicing skills with evidence even when we aren't writing essays.
