This week long activity allows students to play in dirt, and that is always a good thing. Archaeological Digs is a hands-on activity which gives students yet another way of understanding that there are all kinds of CULTURES in the world. It takes the class away from handouts and textbook, and puts them into a creative, constructive mode whereby groups of 4 team together to not only research certain cultures, but gather artifacts that could be found in that particular culture.
The engaging aspect of this activity is the actual building of a cultural trash heap, or Midden, complete with information about the culture and the artifacts that fit in that culture, then going to another group's Midden and do the actual archaeological dig there.
This plan is sequential in nature and includes all of the information and directions needed for a good 'dig'.
