Your kiddos will absolutely love pretending to be an archaeologist! For this activity students use a large paintbrush to brush away sand in a container as they try to find hidden objects. The activity is very easy to set up and only requires aluminum pans (dollar store), play sand (Lowes year round), paintbrush, and about 10 objects to hide in the sand. Simple objects such as clothespins, beads, coins, shells, etc. are hidden in the sand. Students brush away the sand like a real archaeologist in an attempt to find the hidden objects. Then they list them on their recording sheet. You can time them or let them search until they find all the hidden objects. Multiple trays can be set up at once, and students can participate in the activity as a menu choice. Students are then asked to choose 3 of their own possessions that archaeologists could learn from if found in the future. A differentiated version is included where students will draw their artifact museum.
