Teachers: How would you like to involve your students in a fun, hands-on learning activity that will keep the kids interested and allow some learning outside the classroom in the great outdoors? You will not have to go any further than the playgrounds, the school walks, the area outside the cafeteria, the area around the dumpsters or any other safe areas on the school’s property. No real digging involved.
The challenge is to have a Scratch the Surface Mini-Dig where students will explore the school property looking for artifacts we are leaving behind. A mini-dig can fit into to whatever era of History you are studying this year. It connects today to the past in a way that will trigger thinking and discussion with your student. As a bonus, it addresses several literacy common core standards.
