I firmly believe that the best way to get students to write strong narratives is to create assignments that ask them to think symbolically. We all know what happens when we ask students to write about an important or amusing episode from their lives. Strong students do well, but struggling students are often left behind! This assignment ensures that all students taste success. By exploring their homes, or other meaningful structures, they will begin to look at the symbols we attach to the places we inhabit. This handout provides the rationale, the steps (brainstorming through execution), and a thoughtful rubric.
