Arctic Animal Adaptations - Informational Reading Research Cards

This activity enhances students' informational reading and research skills as they learn about Arctic animal adaptations. The unit includes 18 custom Arctic animal cut-out pages, along with a fact page for the back of each card. You determine the size of your project by assigning the number of pages works for your class. I have included blank cards to allow kids to choose their own Arctic animal and create original illustrations.

Students use the internet or reference books to find information about their Arctic animal(s). They glue the front and back pages together to create each complete card. These may also be copied front to back. Students may attach all of the pages together to create an Arctic Animal Adaptations Booklet. (I punch a hole in each corner and attach them using a pipe cleaner.)

The information required on each card is described below:

Class–Is your animal a mammal, bird, fish, etc.

Food-Students list the foods eaten by their animal.

Herbivore, Carnivore, or Omnivore? –The students circle one of the choices. They must determine this by examining their “Food” answer. If their animal only eats plant materials, it is a herbivore. Carnivores only eat other animals. Omnivores eat both plants and other animals.

Physical Adaptations –Students list three body parts or body coverings that help their animal to survive. My students give a brief explanation of how each adaptation is useful.

Behavioral Adaptations –Students list two behaviors that help their animal to survive. My students tell how each behavior is beneficial.
