Arctic and Antarctic Animal Research Bundle

This is part of a new series I’m developing called “Bite-Size Research Guides”. These are designed to be completed in one or two class sessions. Great for the library media specialist who sees students weekly or classroom teachers who are in need of a research project that doesn’t require hours of time but is still educationally valuable. Included are four different versions of research guides featuring 16 different Arctic animals. Please download the PREVIEW to see samples of the four different versions.

The first two sets of research guides use the “3-2-1 Strategy” concept. Students read informational texts (online or print) about the selected animal and write three facts that they learned about this animal, two opinions they have about this animal and one question that they would like to ask about the animal. This strategy does encourage deeper thinking and often leads to students wanting to learn more about these Arctic animals (particularly when they write down their questions!). The first set includes handwriting lines for younger learnings and the second set has no lines for older students.

The third version is designed for the very young researcher. It is a graphic organizer that uses the “Can, Have, Are” strategy.

The fourth version is an informational sheet for students to help students collect information about their Arctic animal.

Our district has a paid subscription to PebbleGo, which is an excellent informational text database for younger or ESL learners. Several of the Arctic animals I’ve included can be researched using PebbleGo. If you don’t have access to PebbleGo, you should be able to use these research guides using print or other online resources that you have access to.

These guides encourage students to learn more about:

Arctic Fox*

Arctic Hare*

Arctic Wolf

Beluga Whale*

Harp Seal

Crabeater Seal

Siberian Husky

Lemming*

Moose*

Narwhal

Polar Bear*

Puffin*

Caribou (I’ve included a Reindeer sheet as well)*

Snow Goose

Snowy Owl

Walrus*

Emperor Penguin* (Added 1/15/17 per customer requests even though it technically
isn't an "Arctic" animal ;-) )

*Included in PebbleGo Database
