Description

This set includes two ways for your students to practice reading the names of Arctic animals: a word wall, and a vocabulary matching game. Use it as part of your study of Arctic animals, or as a high-interest literacy center.

Word Wall:
Use cards with black borders to make a word wall for students to use when reading and writing about Arctic animals.

Vocabulary Matching:
Print either a double set of cards with black borders or a single set of cards with white borders. Set cards out in rows, face down. Players take turns flipping over two cards. If the word and picture match, the player gets to keep the pair. If the cards don’t match, flip them back over and let another player take a turn.

Featured Vocabulary:
Polar bear
Arctic fox
Caribou
Reindeer
Seal
Lemming
Musk ox
Narwhal
Orca
Killer whale
Wolf
Walrus

I use both “caribou” and “reindeer”, as well as “orca” and “killer whale”, and explain to my students that these animals have more than one name. If you prefer, simply pick which name you want to use for each animal and remove the other cards from the set.
