These Arctic birds are a fantastic project to build drawing and printmaking skills while learning about Inuit art from Canada’s Arctic Circle. The lesson includes 18 line drawings of Arctic birds, with step-by-step instructions on how to draw each. The kids love having so many choices of birds, and the handouts really help them with their drawings. Included are the Arctic tern, Canada goose, eider duck, grey owl, herring gull, loon, mallard duck, peregrine falcon, puffin, raven, rock ptarmigan, sandpiper, and snowy owl.
The children also learn some great problem solving skills as there is some trial and error in the printmaking process. There’s nothing like watching a student pull a first print! “That’s so cool! I want to do it again!” We create both marker prints in color and prints with washable printmaking ink. Of course, you can do either or both, whatever works for you. This project ties in with the 5th grade social studies curriculum at our school, which focuses on the Americas.
Time Required: 90-120 minutes
