The Vikings: Arctic Explorers includes a two-part informational text about the Vikings and the evidence that has been found that they were not only in Newfoundland Labrador, but also in Canada’s Arctic. Part 1 includes a brief introduction to archaeology.
Each of the two passages includes a vocabulary activity: six “words to watch for” are listed on the single page of Part 1 and the first page of Part 2. On the activity page for each passage students then match the word with its definition and answer comprehension questions (Part 1) and define the importance of certain concepts (Part 2). Also included is an organizer to complete (with both factual and opinion questions - students can be instructed to use complete sentences when answering). This could be used for reinforcing information learned or as an assessment.
