My students were so into these Arctic sea animals you could hear a pin drop! These paintings are inspired by the charming watercolors of contemporary artist David Scheirer of Studio Tuesday. This project builds confidence in drawing while offering lots of choices: included are step-by-step drawing instructions for 12 animals: the narwhal, ivory gull, walrus, Arctic tern, harp seal, tufted puffin, and two versions of the beluga whale, sea otter, and polar bear. The children draw these in permanent marker and then learn the wet-on-wet technique for painting with watercolors. This project also offers the opportunity to tie in some science by learning about animals that live in and around the Arctic Ocean.
Time Required: 45-60 minutes.
The 32-page project includes:
-Project Overview + Learning Objectives
-Fun Facts About Arctic Sea Animals
-Recommended Books + Word Wall (with Definitions)
-Photo Tutorial for Drawing and Painting
-Student Gallery, Grades 3-4
