This unit was designed with the Kindergarten through 2nd grader in mind. To facilitate research, we have included a KWL chart with a list of suggested guiding questions that the teacher can use with discretion. To facilitate more independent reading and research, both a website and nonfiction book report are included. This unit extends into Math, Reading and Writing. In Math, we included a page of Arctic Addition and Polar Bear math. In Reading, we included an Arctic Riddles activity that engages students to do some research while also using inferences. They are also asked to describe the Arctic. When they help Lilly sort her toys, they are learning to classify as they sort the toys according to food chain. For phonics instruction, there is a coloring sheet with long i words where they help the polar bear navigate the water and ice while she hunts for seal. In writing, the Polar Bear Shuffle invites students to find the action words that the polar bear is going in each sentence. In Bear's the Question, they get more familiar with question words, and circle the question words in each question about bears around the world.
