School of Science - Are Viruses Alive??
The story of how viruses attack our cells and spread from cell to cell is very interesting to students because it sounds like a spy movie or a TV show......so why not use that as a hook to grab their interest?!
Students will read about how a virus acts as a spy and takes control of a host cell in order to reproduce. Viruses are classified as nonliving, but they do some very lifelike things! After reading about how viruses function, students will be asked to complete a chart that uses the 6 traits of living organisms to assess whether a virus is alive or not. The completed chart can be used by students to form their own opinion about whether viruses are alive or not. Opinion question can be used as a Think-Pair-Share activity, as a short answer homework or classwork summary activity, as a formal writing assignment, or even as a class debate!
