This project was used with a group of 8th graders in pre-algebra.
Students are given a job and a certain hourly wage. They are then presented with a series of situations, such as buying a car, paying 20% in wage tax, renting a place to live, and paying for gas.
Key concepts include: percent of a number (taxes), and proportions.
The goal of the project is for students to realize how expensive it is to live on some of the basic necessities.
