Students need activities if they are going to give a darn about Area! If you have your own set of Geoboards and rubber bands, this activity can get your kids excited about calculating the area of rectangles, parallelograms, triangles, trapezoids, and composite figures.
First, this PowerPoint show asks your students to use Geoboards and rubber bands to create 10 different shapes and calculate the area of each. Geoboard pictures are included to help your students. Next, the students have a chance to create their own shapes and work with their neighbors. At the end, students are given 5 additional challenges, such as "create a figure with an area of 8 square units, but it can't be a rectangle!"
Check out the Discovering Area with Cutting and Gluing and the Exploring Surface Area with Nets
packs for more hands-on, fun area activities. Enjoy!
(Note: Be sure you have your own Geoboards and rubber bands before you purchase this activity.)
