Product Description
Area Model Task Cards for Division were designed to scaffold students’ learning and understanding of using the area model for division.These cards are for division with 3 digit and 4 digit dividends with 1 digit and 2 digit divisors {20 cards for each type for a total of 160 cards in the bundled set}.

For a limited time, this task card set includes a FREE UPGRADE to a self-checking, digital version hosted at Boom Learning℠. Grab it now and the task card set will remain in your Boom Learning library forever!

As we have worked to learn the area model method to divide 3 and 4 digit quotients, I’ve noticed commonalities among my students who are struggling to learn the method:

1) Students have a hard time deciding which initial number to subtract from the dividend;
2) Students struggle to understand what number needs to be placed above the rectangle/box (the other factor or the partial quotient)

To help students better understand the area model, I designed these Area Model task cards where I have done the first step by giving students a multiple that can be subtracted from the dividend. Since I want students to see that they can really start from any entry point that makes sense, I did not always use the largest initial number that is possible.

I also created cards with and without the first partial quotient given to provide you with another level of challenge.

Of course, computation and multiplication fact errors occur regularly as students are learning to divide. To combat this issue, students check their quotients using multiplication. The student recording sheet I have provided expects students to check their quotient and search for errors if it does not check out.
