Area models, partial products, multiplication, standard algorithm
Here are 2 sets of 6 single step 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication word problems. Each problem has a recording sheet for students to solve the multiplication in three ways, using the area model, partial products, and then the standard algorithm.
12 single step 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication word problems. A recording sheet that allows students to solve each problem using the area model, partial products and finally the standard algorithm. An answer key with each step for you.
Students need: a half sheet of word problems and 3 of the recording sheets. (per 6 questions)
Goal: Allowing students to work a single problem multiple ways decreases the anxiety, it also shows them multiple representations and it keeps them from being locked in to solving just one way that they may not understand. Partial products and area models have the added benefit of reinforcing place value concepts for students as well.
How to: Put students in groups of 3-4 and have them work together solving partial products, algorithms and area models
Accommodations notes: You may want to have students physically build the arrays with base 10 blocks if they are struggling with the concept of area model.
