Using an area model, or box model, to teach multiplication is an excellent way to build conceptual understanding that the standard algorithm for multiplication does not provide. For the past two years, I have used only area models when teaching multiplication (no standard algorithm) and I have seen a HUGE improvement in accuracy and number sense.

As the numbers get bigger, the shape of the area model changes. This bundle is designed to build slowly so that students grow comfortable with the strategy before they tackle larger numbers. Students are also asked to estimate the product first and then check their product for reasonableness in the end. This builds accuracy and number sense.
Each time students are introduced to a new type of problem (2 x 1, 3 x 1, 4 x1, or 2 x 2) they practice it for a second day within word problems.
This bundle is perfectly aligned to 4.NBT.B.5 for 4th grade, but could also be used as a review lesson for 5th - 7th grades or as a challenge lesson for 3rd graders that are really excelling at multiplication.
