Error analysis problems are a great way to check your students' understanding of a concept. Instead of just solving the same problems again and again on a worksheet, they have to use their critical thinking skills to determine where, if anywhere, the example student(s) went wrong. This forces them to think outside of the box and develop a deeper understanding of the WHY behind the procedure and processes.

This download includes five error analysis problems. Three are 2 X 2 digits and two are 4 X 1 digits.
This perfectly aligns with 4th grade Common Core standard: NBT.5: (Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.) This would also work well for higher third graders and lower fifth graders.
These tasks would be great to use during guided math centers, whole-group centers, or independent practice.
