In this file you will find 10 task cards aimed at a deeper understanding of area and percents. Each task card contains at least two problems. the first problem gives an area and then clues are given in order for students to determine other areas based on a percent of the original area. For example, in one card, students are given the area of a bedroom and students must find the area of a bedroom that is 200% of the first bedroom.
Once students have determined the area, they are then required to determine what the length and width (or base and height) could be. This leaves the task open-ended and allows for multiple correct responses.
Area of rectangles, squares, and triangles are included. Percents are based on benchmark values of 20%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, or combinations thereof.
Answers have been provided for the percent-based area calculations. Since multiple answers for the length/width (base/height) are possible, I did not include those as you could choose to require students to use whole numbers only, or you could challenge them to use decimals/fractions.
The cards vary in degree of difficulty allowing for you to differentiate this activity for your classroom. The cards get more difficult as the task number increases.
