This activity is so much fun and lends itself incredibly well to cooperative learning. Students debate differing opinions forcing participants to think more critically. This activity can also be assigned to students individually. You decide what works best for your group!

Materials included and preparation:

Teaching poster (1 copy needed for display, discussion, and debate)
Grid paper (1-2 sheets per student OR group of students)
12” x 18” white construction paper (1-2 sheets per student OR group of students) If a larger working space is needed, advise students to tape two sheets of white construction paper together.
Task Description worksheet – page 1 (1 per student OR group of students)
Engineering The City worksheet – page 2 (1 per student OR group of students)
City Banner (1 banner per student OR group of students)

Simple teaching directions:

Display the teaching poster. Read aloud and discuss.
Distribute the student worksheet – page 1. Read aloud and discuss.
Students follow the directions outlined on the worksheet – page 1.
As students near the completion of worksheet page 1…
Distribute and discuss student worksheet page 2.
When students complete page 1 they follow page 2 directions exactly.

Post activity discussion:

What were the challenges of working with a group? (If students worked individually ignore this question.)
When you disagreed with group members how did you arrive at a consensus/mutual decision? (If students worked individually ignore this question.)
What kinds of buildings and spaces did you add to the city? Why?
What things did you consider when placing buildings and spaces?
How might people in the city be employed (jobs)?
What challenges might a real-life city planner face?
Would you like to - one day - become a city planner? What skills would you need? Name the pros (pluses) and cons (minuses).

*Consider displaying the finished student work! Caption the work “Visionary Thinking And City Planning” using the sign provided!
