As a part of the Virginia Math SOLs, students must be able to differentiate between area, perimeter, and volume. Why not allow students to be creative while doing this? For this activity, I normally split students up into groups or allow them to work together in partners. This would also be a great addition to add to a center or to use as an extender!
Students can work together to create their own word problems about area, perimeter, and volume using the description given to them on each problem. If there is extra time, have students trade off and try to solve their peers' problems! This product contains 1 sheet of descriptions and 2 different recording sheets if partner work is used. The second recording sheet can also be used to show students' work as they solve their problems. The kids enjoy the challenge and opportunity to collaborate. Enjoy!
