Product Description
Students will be engaged in a rigorous 5-day unit that requires them to use tiling to investigate the properties of area using real-world story problems in contextual situations. They will make connections between the area algorithm with multiplication and/or repeated addition. They will be asked to develop a conceptual understanding and a deep working knowledge of how to use the tools provided (the circles and rectangular/square teacher created manipulatives) to construct life sized and scaled models, and also to explain these to their peers to deepen their own processes while opening their eyes to a way that may help them conceptualize the task in a new way. After four insightful days of learning, students will take a formal assessment to show what they know. On the fifth academic day, students will show what they learned on a formal assessment. Grading rubrics and answer keys are provided for all activities.
