Looking for a creative way to test your students' skills on perimeter and area?
In this project, students are told that they will be designing, planning, and constructing (there is a non-construction version as well!) a house for a project manager (you!). They have be given certain specifications that they must meet for their house to get your seal of approval.
Students are asked to create blueprints on graph paper with their area and perimeter (of the house, and the yard/fence), an exterior sketch of their house, a materials list, and their evaluation rubric.
If you choose for students not to actually construct a model house, they are asked to do a scaled "base sketch" of the foundation of the house, and the fence. There are many ideas in this project on how to integrate it or use it in different ways (different materials, in class, out of class, etc...!)
Student Information Sheet (4 versions: inches and centimeters/construction version and non-construction version)
Evaluation Sheet (for teacher)
Ideas and Notes about project and different uses!
An example of completed blueprints, sketch, materials list, and photo of a constructed house!
I hope you have loads of fun with this project! The students can get very creative with this project, and show off their measurement skills!
