This resource contains 2 “rich word problems” that include expressions with letters for numbers, tables, graphs, and interpreting results. Students love to talk about birthdays. In the first problem, the students must arrange a fixed number of tables to invite the optimal number of friends to their birthday party. In the second problem, a goat farmer wants to build a fence with a fixed number of fence sections to prevent his goats from jumping on his truck. There are many YouTube funny videos that can be the introduction to this problem. I offer these problems as an editable PowerPoint file as well as a pdf. I have also included a page of lesson plan suggestions and an adapted version of each problem for differentiation in your classroom. Manipulatives and/or graph paper enhance these problems. Each problem should take at least one math class.
