This is a worksheet I originally wrote for struggling Algebra 1 students in an Algebra Support class. I found it really helpful for my regular Algebra 1 students as well, as I found they have numerous misconceptions about area:
"For area, you multiply, and for perimeter, you add..."
"Area is just length times width" (always.. no matter what the shape is...)
"Area is the inside; perimeter is the outside."
After completing this worksheet, many of these misconceptions go away, or at least are challenged in the students' minds.
I use this activity within cooperative groups, and I circulate to make sure they are getting the purpose of the questions.
This worksheet is intended to be written on directly.
