What educators are saying

It's all here! So many options for instruction and practice. I used the dog/cat games. Great opportunities to push student to think more deeply and apply new learning. Thank you for creating this!
Wonderful resource. I cut out the "cards," laminated them and put them on a keyring for students to practice area/perimeter during math centers. Can be played with a partner or independently.

Overview:

  • Find Missing Sides Given the Area
  • Find Missing Sides Given the Perimeter
  • Area and Perimeter Missing Sides Review
  • Compare Area and Perimeter of 2 Rectangles

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

✅2 AREA AND PERIMETER MISSING SIDES MINI LESSONS

There are TWO interactive mini-lessons included that students can glue into their notebooks to help them have something to reference after learning these two concepts. This interactive notebook entry is "no-nonsense" which means that students simply have to cut and glue. There is no folding to make it easier for you to teach the lesson faster and to keep students on track.

✅10 AREA AND PERIMETER MISSING SIDES WORKSHEETS

In the ten worksheets included, students practice:

-finding missing side length given area

-finding missing side length given perimeter

-comparing rectangles with same area

-comparing rectangles with same perimeter

-drawing rectangles with same area or perimeter

✅ 4 ERROR ANALYSIS PAGES

Students look at four different work samples and decide which pages are right and which are wrong based on what is shown. These are perfect for math talk or whole group discussions. The error analysis pages help with evaluating common third grade math mistakes.

✅CREATE YOUR OWN MANSION ACTIVITY

There are THREE differentiated create your own mansion activities where students make their own house using the guidelines given. They have to create a house where some rooms have the same area and some have the same perimeter. The three versions allow you to give each student the version appropriate for them.

✅GAME #1: CATS VS. DOGS GAME

There is also a missing side lengths game called where students have the cats go against the dogs! In the game, students have to race against a partner to find all the missing side lengths before the other person wins! One person plays as the cats and the other person plays as the dogs. The first person to put all of their pets on the correct crate missing side lengths wins!

✅ GAME #2: BUILD A PET SHOP GAME

Each player gets a background to build their pet shop on. Playing cards and pet pieces go in the middle. Each time you get an answer correct, you earn a piece for your pet shop. Chance cards are provided to spice up gameplay. You never know who’s going to win with these included! The first person to finish getting 10 pet shop items in their pet shop wins!

✅ GAME #3: WHOLE CLASS GAME

I call this game "Bucket Filler!". Set up the task cards all around the room for students. Print enough of each task card for every student. Give each student a recording sheet. Let students wander the room and solve each task card. When they solve a card, they bring it to the teacher to be checked. If it's correct, they get to drop the task card in a bucket. At the end of gameplay, the teacher draws names out of the bucket. Those students earn a small prize as a reward (an eraser, a pencil, etc).

✅ GAME #4: RACING GAME

This game is called "Line Them Up!". In the game, students race to see which team can line their cards up in the correct order first. Here are the steps to play. Mix up each set of cards well. Give a set of cards to each team. Start the race. Students find the START card first. They put this down. Once the start card is found, students find the answer to the equation. They continue to “Line Them Up” until they reach the FINISH card. The first team done wins!

✅21 AREA AND PERIMETER POSTERS

There are 21 area and perimeter posters for you to hang on the wall for students to reference during your area and perimeter unit. These are a great helpful reminder for students when learning about the difference between area and perimeter.

This resource includes everything you need to teach students how to find the length of a missing side when they are given the area or perimeter. It also includes how to teach students to compare rectangles and decide if they have the same area or the same perimeter (correlating with standard 3.MD.8).

A black and white version of each game and activity is included. This is perfect for a 3rd grade area and perimeter or 4th grade area and perimeter unit.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This aligns with 3rd Grade Common Core Standards 3.MD.5-3.MD.8:

  • Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement.
  • Measure areas by counting unit squares (square cm, square m, square in, square ft, and improvised units).
  • Relate area to the operations of multiplication and addition.
  • Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.

This aligns with 3rd Grade Texas TEKS:

  • TEKS 3.7B: determine the perimeter of a polygon or a missing length when given perimeter and remaining side lengths in problems

This aligns with 4th Grade Texas TEKS:

  • TEKS 4.5C: use models to determine the formulas for the perimeter of a rectangle (l + w + l + w or 2l + 2w), including the special form for perimeter of a square (4s) and the area of a rectangle (l x w)
  • TEKS 4.5D: solve problems related to perimeter and area of rectangles where dimensions are whole numbers

This aligns with Florida BEST Standards (B.E.S.T.)

  • MA.3.GR.2.1 Explore area as an attribute of a two-dimensional figure by covering the figure with unit squares without gaps or overlaps. Find areas of rectangles by counting unit squares.
  • MA.3.GR.2.2 Find the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths using a visual model and a multiplication formula.
  • MA.3.GR.2.3 Solve mathematical and real-world problems involving the perimeter and area of rectangles with whole-number side lengths using a visual model and a formula.
