Problem solving is crucial to the Common Core and real world activities. I have developed this freebie with several area and perimeter problems that really get your students thinking!

There are three problems included which can be used in a math workshop setting, as homework, or as a math journal prompt. They are also great for test prep.

I have used these problems with my third graders, but they would be appropriate for third or fourth grade students.

In my classroom, students work in partners or small groups to solve the problems and then we come together as a whole class to discuss our strategies for solving them.

I will be making a larger product this summer based on the activities in this freebie. If you enjoy the freebie, please follow to get word on when the full product is released. I would also love any feedback on any skills or additions you would like to see!

Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.
Relate area to the operations of multiplication and addition.
Measure areas by counting unit squares (square cm, square m, square in, square ft, and improvised units).
Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement.
