This zoo design project is always a favorite and is completed as a cumulative project after studying area and perimeter. Students will create a zoo featuring at least six animal enclosures. They will find both the perimeter and area of these enclosures. Students must have a knowledge of area and perimeter before beginning this activity. Print out the directions/recording sheet for the students. They will also need a sheet of grid or graph paper. Cm graph paper works well for my third graders. Page 3 includes a request for at least three of the shapes to be composite shapes, page 4 does not.
