Do you need a scaffolding worksheet for finding the area of complex shapes? These worksheets build upon each other where students can record the answers to each step along the way. They also provide students with ample work space.
At first, students will find only one missing side to the complex shape, which is already decomposed into 2 rectangles. You can have students color each rectangle to show the length and width, and then they can find the area of the 2 rectangles. The last step on the worksheet has the students add the 2 areas together.
The next set of complex shapes has 2 missing sides that are needed to be found first. Here, the complex shapes are still decomposed into 2 rectangles for the students. The steps are still provided for students to record all their answers along the way.
The third set of complex shapes has students finding the missing sides and decomposing it into 2 rectangles on their own. The steps are still provided for students to record all their answers along the way.
The last set of complex shapes can be used as an assessment. Students must find the missing sides and decompose it into 2 rectangles, but the steps are not provided.
