WHAT'S INCLUDED?
✅RECTILINEAR AREA MINI LESSON
There is an interactive mini-lesson included that students can glue into their notebooks to help them have something to reference after learning how to find the rectilinear area of figures. This interactive notebook entry is "no-nonsense" which means that students simply have to cut and glue. There is no folding to make it easier for you to teach the lesson faster and to keep students on track. This is perfect for students to take area of composite figures notes.
✅10 RECTILINEAR AREA WORKSHEETS
In the ten area of composite figures worksheets included, students slowly learn how to figure out rectilinear area. I added 10 differentiated worksheets to allow you to give students the work that is best for them! The first three worksheets start out finding the area of regular rectangles using the distributive property. This allows students to easily transfer their knowledge to area of composite figures in the other 7 worksheets.
✅ 4 RECTILINEAR AREA ERROR ANALYSIS PAGES
Students look at four different work samples and decide which pages are right and which are wrong based on what is shown. These are perfect for math talk or whole group discussions. The error analysis pages help with evaluating common third grade math mistakes.
✅CREATE YOUR OWN AMUSEMENT PARK ACTIVITY
There is a create-your-own amusement park activity where students have to use their knowledge of rectilinear area to build their own amusement park. There are 3 versions to allow for easy differentiation!
✅ BUILD A DINO PARK GAME
Each player gets a background to build their dino park on. Playing cards and dino pieces go in the middle. Each time you get an answer correct, you earn a piece for your dino park. Chance cards are provided to spice up gameplay. You never know who’s going to win with these included! The first person to finish getting 10 dino items on their park wins!
✅ WHOLE CLASS GAME
I call this game "Bucket Filler!". Set up the task cards all around the room for students. Print enough of each task card for every student. Give each student a recording sheet. Let students wander the room and solve each task card. When they solve a card, they bring it to the teacher to be checked. If it's correct, they get to drop the task card in a bucket. At the end of gameplay, the teacher draws names out of the bucket. Those students earn a small prize as a reward (an eraser, a pencil, etc).
✅AMUSEMENT PARK GAME
There is a rectilinear area game included! In the game, students have to find the area of each rectilinear figure in an amusement park. They then have to find the sign that goes with the correct area. This is one of my class's favorite games we play all year. It's easy to play individually or with a partner! This game is perfect for an area of composite figures cooperative learning activity.
✅21 AREA AND PERIMETER POSTERS
There are 21 area and perimeter posters for you to hang on the wall for students to reference during your area and perimeter unit. These are a great helpful reminder for students when learning about the difference between area and perimeter.
This resource includes everything you need to teach finding the area of composite figures to your students. This product was designed for third graders, but would work great as a 4th grade rectilinear area unit. All games and activities come in black and white and color.

This aligns with 3rd Grade Common Core Standards 3.MD.5-3.MD.8:
- Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement.
- Measure areas by counting unit squares (square cm, square m, square in, square ft, and improvised units).
- Relate area to the operations of multiplication and addition.
- Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.
This aligns with 3rd Grade Texas TEKS:
- TEKS 3.6D: decompose composite figures formed by rectangles into non-overlapping rectangles to determine the area of the original figure using the additive property of area
This aligns with 4th Grade Texas TEKS:
- TEKS 4.5D: solve problems related to perimeter and area of rectangles where dimensions are whole numbers
This aligns with Florida BEST Standards (B.E.S.T.)
- MA.3.GR.2.4 Solve mathematical and real-world problems involving the perimeter and area of composite figures composed of non-overlapping rectangles with whole number side lengths.
