In this activity, students get a half-sheet with 5 problems:
Problems 1 - 3: Calculate the area, when given a base and height.
Problem #4: Calculate the base, when given the area and height.
Problem #5 (word problem): Calculate the area when given the PERIMETER of a rectangle and a length.
All five problems include rational numbers (in lengths and solutions).
There are two half sheets have different problems, but the same answers. They are labeled practice A and B.
Once solved, students partner up and check their answers. They then complete a reflections page, in which they discuss and describe how they solved problems, checked their work, and why it is important to write formulas and substitute values when working with area of parallelograms.
This activity encourages students to collaborate and discuss problems. If students come up with different answers, they can work together to figure out who is correct.
An answer key is included, as well as detailed directions.
