Area of rectangles: This resource is designed for third graders who need additional practice with the concept of area- specifically finding the area of rectangles. (TEKS 3.6C and Common Core Standards 3.MD.C.7.A, 3.MD.C.7.B).

The Math Intervention Series was created based on a need for quick, easy prep activities that could be used with students who need additional practice in key math skills. It is designed to be used with a small group during a guided math workshop or tutoring session. Each component of this resource (small group, math center, and assessment) is designed with a specific time frame in mind – about 15 to 20 minutes per activity. This resource can be used in one day or spread across several days.

This resource includes:
★Page 3: Resource information including when the resource is used and teacher prep of materials (if needed)

★Pages 4-8: Small Group lesson plans, word problems, and answer key.
The word problems all involve finding the area of a rectangle using whole number side lengths. The word problems are designed to be worked through with teacher guidance in order to introduce and practice strategies. The small group component includes four word problems, lesson plans, and an answer key.

★ Pages 9-16: Area Task Cards- Includes an assignment poster to display, 12 task cards, recording sheet, and answer key. This is designed as part of a math center. Students find the area of rectangles and create their own area word problem. Note: The task cards are open-ended, not multiple choice. Open-ended questions require students to work through each problem and also take out the possibility of guessing the correct answer. *Includes a teacher reference answer key with images of each task card and an explanation of the correct answer.

★ Pages 17-18 Quick-check/Assessment: This one page assessment includes 8 questions. Students must answer the area word problems.

3.6(C) determine the area of rectangles with whole number side lengths in problems using multiplication related to the number of rows times the number of unit squares in each row
This resource also can be used to review the following Common Core Standards:
*CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.C.7.AFind the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths by tiling it, and show that the area is the same as would be found by multiplying the side lengths. (*when used with centimeter grid paper)
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.C.7.BMultiply side lengths to find areas of rectangles with whole-number side lengths in the context of solving real world and mathematical problems, and represent whole-number products as rectangular areas in mathematical reasoning
