Use this resource to have students practice finding the area of shapes using Google Slides. In this math resource, students will manipulate objects on the slide as well as enter text to solve and answer questions about finding the area.

WHY TEACH USING GOOGLE APPS?

Though many tasks can be done with paper and pencil, doing the same task through Google Apps can present greater opportunities for student learning. Google Slides can embed links to useful videos; Google Slides can enhance understanding with color diagrams, pictures and photographs; animation can also be embedded and use to demonstrate a concept. Most importantly, students are using 21st century learning tools that will prepare them for eventual online standardized testing.

HOW IT WORKS

The slides are designed to be worked on independently after the student has learned how to find the area of a shape. Included are 2 examples that remind students how to find the area counting units squares or multiplying measured sides.

There’s also a practice page just for learning how to drag and draw objects on the screen correctly. Each slide also has Speaker Notes that can be accessed on each slide to give the students more hints and instructions.

If the slide is interactive, it means there are places for the students to either:

♦ manipulate and drag shapes to match a particular area

♦ manipulate and drag shapes to complete a puzzle

♦ manipulate and drag shapes to construct a shape

♦ draw shapes to create shapes

♦ text boxes to type and explain

Finally, there’s a self-assessment for the student to gauge understanding area concept.

The students will also use the shape tool to draw. Included are two slides THAT HAVE EMBEDDED ANIMATION that explain finding area by either counting unit squares or multiplying measured sides.
