This activity is entitled "Triangle, Triangle Where are you?" It starts off basic with the student having 2 different colored cookies (cut into triangles). Students are to use a ruler to measure the length and width. From their findings, they are to find the area of both triangles. I used food coloring to change the color of the cookies and I made them two different sizes. All green cookies were smaller than blue cookies (this made the directions much clearer).
The lesson concludes with a challenging question. Students are to look around the room and find a rectangle. They have to measure the rectangle with their ruler and then cut the rectangle in half. They have to identify the shapes made (triangles), how many (2), and then they have to find the area of one of the triangles.
**The first page in this lesson is the cookie recipe I used to make the cookie cakes.**
