Want an engaging 2-week unit to make your students far more precise, critical readers of nonfiction? Ready to tiptoe past the boring basics of argument and delve into the positive and negative writing techniques that real authors and speakers use?

This unit has been a big hit with my students for the past two years, and it left a visible impact in their ability to…
• Evaluate an argument for its flaws (and positives)
• Understand why some texts sound good (and why some are NOT as good as they “sound”)
• Decide which of two arguments is “better”
• Do close reading of a variety of nonfiction articles and speech transcripts
• Learn about rhetoric, propaganda, fallacies, and other writing techniques
• Know the difference between argumentative and persuasive writing
• Deal with the media they see in the 2016 election (sigh)

Originally made with mixed-ability 8th graders in mind, this unit has been high-school-teacher-approved as well; I’ve been told it is successful for grades 9-12 as well as an AP Language class. Since it is EDITABLE, you can adapt the different pieces to the needs of your grade level!

This unit contains everything you need, even if this topic isn’t within your comfort zone AND even if students are coming in with no prior knowledge. This download of 57 pages/slides includes the following:
• Teacher’s guide, including a sample calendar
• A unit overview/preview page for students
• My Rhetoric, Propaganda, & Fallacies Flipbook of vocab
• A PowerPoint of introductory lessons, WITH guided notes
• An optional stations activity to help you teach the flipbook
• A Vocab Poster activity (to help students learn all the vocab terms)
• Online flashcards, via my premade Quizlet set
• A reading activity, including a graphic organizer and three sample texts, to practice identifying the techniques used by authors and decide which argument(s) are “better”
• A vocab and reading skills quiz, with articles and answer key
• MY FAVORITE PART… a Choice Argument Critique Assignment, in which students choose their own text to rip apart and critique for its pros and cons :)
