Lesson: In groups of 4-5, the students will be given a topic. The students will develop a thesis (position statement) and three claims to support that thesis.
Rationale: This is a great activity for before drafting. I have each group place their thesis and claims on a poster and present. These can then hang around the class to show how each claim (the topic of each body paragraph) must be different (Example: Saves Money, Reduces Stress, Improves academics). It helps them understand the structure and organization of this genre of writing.
