Product Description
Performance Task | Performance Tasks | Argument Performance Task | Argument Writing | Common Core Argument

Performance tasks are an integral part of the new Common Core standards and assessments. These performance tasks take many forms, but the structure is fairly standard. Students are presented with sources of information on the central subject, and are first asked to gather information from those sources. Then, students are asked to compose a piece of writing that answers the central prompt while incorporating evidence from the source materials.

These practice assignments will introduce students to the structure of a performance task and also help them learn the various steps in the process. The sources include a variety of text types including videos, articles, infographics, charts, and images. The diversity of sources is beneficial for students to see that information and evidence can be gathered from many places. This breaks a commonly preconceived idea that evidence can only come from printed text.

Two of the three included performance tasks can be used as supplemental activities for two pieces of reading – The Diary of Anne Frank (or any Holocaust-related reading) and Flowers for Algernon. However, these two performance tasks can be strong stand-alone activities.

You'll receive:
A detailed overview of the performance task writing model complete with instructions for use in your classroom. Three complete performance task activities are included, along with a text set for each activity. Also included are student handouts that will help students gather information and organize their ideas. Lastly, two mini-lessons relating to using and citing evidence in writing are included.
