This activity is a great way to get students thinking and discusses differences between chemical and physical reactions. First, students will work in small group to sort cards into one of three categories in terms of how well the statement on the card supports the claim that baking a cake is a chemical reaction. Then, students will rotate around the classroom to see what other groups have come up with and make thoughtful comments and comparisons. This allows for maximum collaboration, chances to restate thinking and ideas, and time for students to modify their original ideas when given new information. Great intro activity for learning about chemical reactions!
