I use this assignment following a discussion of the Rhetorical Triangle. I allow my students the choice to pick which format they want to use. They can discuss all counterclaims first, then their own claims, or they can alternate and rebut each counterclaim. I have two graphic organizers they can pick from which are free downloads in my store. (Check them out!) The subject of the argument is simple, but it allowed my students to take more ownership in the essay. I believed they learned effectively how to use ethos, pathos, and logos for the benefit of their argument. I had several students actually give their essays to the intended audience with promising results for them!
